This stone is noted for its elegant edges and interesting facade, and its pockets of dents and crevices make it so that incense lit at its bottom will see smoke flow from every opening. However, the ship that the rock was traveling on reportedly sunk in Huangpu River and was later retrieved by Pan Yunduan. The Exquisite Jade Rock was (legend has it) originally commissioned by the Huizong Emperor, who reigned over the Northern Song Dynasty from 1100-1126 AD. This reportedly brings a natural element to the stones, even more prized if every angle offers a different perspective. Before delivery, these rocks (often made of a soft/porous limestone) are submerged in water to be carved naturally by the eddies and currents of the moving waves. This particular piece of earth reportedly hails from the nearby Lake Tai, where many of China’s famous garden rocks are originally shaped. This is the Exquisite Jade Rock (Yuling Long, 玉玲珑), perhaps Shanghai’s most famous stone. ![]() In the fifth area of the gardens, one will probably be met with a sea of tourists frantically snapping photos of a tall rock, riddled with holes and fissures. ![]()
